Text description provided by the architects. The building is a residential building located near the main square of Bitritto, a small town not far from Bari.
It is positioned in a corner lot, within a densely built part of the city, situated among buildings which differ greatly both in their quality and period. The request of the client was to transform the building, formerly dedicated to different uses, into a solely residential building.
The project is essentially focused on the new relationships between the building and the surrounding urban context and between internal and external spaces of the house due to the new volume, first obtained by demolition operations and thesubsequent construction.
The building consists of a living area on the ground floor , a sleeping area on the first floor and a studio on the upper level where the strongest connection with the open space is created, due to the outer overlooking balcony. It has been very important to solve the problem of giving natural light to the indoor spaces while at the same time keeping the privacy for themselves. We thought to close off and lift ground zero: the east facade is totally windowless at the basement while the south one has been moved back and shaded using a brise-soleil, and a little green space created.
The stairwell has been totally transformed; the previous heavy concrete structure has been substituted with a hung steel structure with wooden steps. It is a source of light, it brings a light beam from the large upper level window to the lower living room, illuminating all the interiors facing the stairwell.
